Mother’s Day blooms for SLAK Flowers
SLAK Flowers celebrated its most successful sales period to date, with floral arrangements flying out the door for Mother’s Day 2021.
Hosting a series of pop-up shops around Sydney, Mother’s Day was more than just an opportunity to sell beautiful flowers.
It was a chance for the Sydney florist to spread the word about its incredible mission – giving hope and employment to the homeless people of Sydney.
“We know that Mother’s Day is the biggest occasion in the year for giving flowers and we wanted to ensure that for this occasion we could be seen more and our story heard by more and so we decided on a different approach to how we would normally sell our floral arrangements,” said SLAK Flowers founder Simla Sooboodoo.
Mother’s Day floral arrangements: A pop-up success
Following the lead of Sydney woman, Janet Heyden, who initiated Mother’s Day in Australia to bring happiness to lonely mothers (more in our first blog HERE), SLAK was excited to spread its own version of loving acts of kindness across Sydney.
With flowers in their arms and compassion in their hearts, the team hit the streets of the inner west in the first week of May.
Hosting a pop-up shop at Petersham café, Pig and Pastry, and Lane Cove Market Square, SLAK’s distinctive arrangements drew crowds of fascinated customers.
Children were able to create their own bouquets for mum, making it a unique and interactive experience. A variety of floral arrangements and figurines were also available to purchase at each location.
Popular choices included SLAK’s “Let Yourself Blossom” watering can floral arrangement of fresh blooms and flower figurine – see it here. Also a hit were the florist’s small bouquets and medium native flower bouquets.
By chatting with SLAK representatives, customers learned firsthand about the florist’s handmade arrangements. They left with a better understanding of how their purchase had made a difference to Sydney’s homeless.
Floral arrangements with a “World” of difference
It’s not just customers who are getting behind the Sydney social enterprise. Current reigning Miss World Australia title holder, Sarah Marschke is also a keen advocator for SLAK.
“If the mum in your life is passionate about making the world a better place, skip the chocolates and pick one of these thoughtful gifts that give back,” she said during SLAK’s Mother’s Day promotion.
“As the current Miss World Australia, I am approached continuously to endorse brands but what drew me to SLAK Flowers was the purpose underpinning the business. Not only do they produce wonderful floral arrangements and classy floral fashion accessories but the philanthropic work they do to tackle homelessness is incredibly noble,” Sarah said.
“Knowing that the employees of SLAK Flowers are women who have fled domestic violence are given an opportunity to work, earn an income and help find a safer and better way forward was important for me to get behind what they do,” she went on to add.
Sarah has worked with the florist on a range of projects, including the launch of its range of floral fascinators. Together with models Kymberlee Street and Anna Gorbunova, the passionate beauty queen showcased SLAK’s range of fun and unique headpieces.
Sarah’s ongoing work with various Beauty with a Purpose projects sees her advocating the concept of “fashion and compassion”. It is this attitude that sees her align seamlessly – and proudly – into the SLAK story.
